WHAT IS KUMBHAK?

What is Kumbhak?

Kumbhak is a Sanskrit word that translates into ‘breath-hold.’

Illustrated examples of effort and breath-hold

Do you notice that when effort is at its maximum, you are holding your breath?

A breath-hold is involved whenever the body draws on strength and effort. Kumbhak, or ‘breath-hold,’ is the body’s effort-making ability.

“Na Kumbhasadrisham Balam”

“There is no power like Kumbhak.”

UNDERSTANDING KUMBHAK

Kumbhak within the breath cycle

In Ayurveda, Kumbhak is a step within the complete breath cycle.

The complete cycle consists of inhalation, holding the breath, exhalation and holding the breath again. These stages are known as Poorak, Kumbhak and Rechak.

THE LITERAL MEANING

Kumbha means pot or vessel

“Kumbha” means pot or vessel. Just as a pot holds water, Kumbhak holds the breath and conserves vital energy, Prana, within the body.

THE DEEPER IDEA

All processes are enabled by a pressure gradient

All processes in the external world are enabled by a pressure gradient.

Clouds moving through the air and water and nutrients travelling through a tree’s roots and stem

Air and clouds

Air and clouds move from high pressure to low pressure.

Water and nutrients in plants and trees

Water and nutrients move from roots to leaves using osmotic pressure.

The body

Internal processes within the body happen through a pressure gradient.

The process that controls this within the body is called Vaata. The deeper process that controls all creation is Shiva Tatva.

FROM KUMBHAK TO KUMBHAK THERAPY

What is Kumbhak Therapy?

Kumbhak Therapy is the body of work developed by Swamy Srii RajVibhu within an Ayurvedic framework. It uses specific breathing patterns to build the body’s internal strength and support weakened organs or functions.

In Ayurveda, a basic principle of treatment is “Yatha Balam Tatha Chikitsa,” meaning that treatment should be based on the strength of the body to heal itself. The body has an inherent ability to recover from damage or illness, and this ability is a function of the strength of the body.

This inherent strength is a function of the Kumbhak factor, or Kumbhak capacity.

Every dynamic activity is performed with the support of a stable base. When the organ, or the factor supporting the organ, becomes weak, disease occurs within the body. The solution therefore lies in strengthening the organs or the factors supporting them.

Kumbhak Therapy works towards increasing this internal strength. Food and medicines play a complementary role.

From foundation to application

Swamy Srii RajVibhu’s work applies this foundation through specialised initiatives concerned with reproductive health, chronic and metabolic conditions, neuro and musculoskeletal conditions, and mental and emotional wellbeing.
